MEET THE FOUNDER

Hi, I’m Pranav Mittal, a Grade 12 student at CMS Cambridge, Lucknow, with a deep interest in economics, business and public policy. Much of my work centres on my city’s informal economy, from supporting traditional artisans to researching how policy affects local communities. I also write on economic issues and enjoy telling the stories of the people of Lucknow through film and photography. I love learning from the people around me, and I hope to study economics and business so I can build ventures that create real value for communities that need it most.

HOW IT STARTED

The idea for Artisans of Lucknow began during a routine visit to one of the city’s traditional market streets, where a craftsman sat quietly finishing a chikankari kurta in a nearly empty shop. The piece had taken him three weeks, yet it would barely sell for enough to cover his time, while machine-made copies down the street sold faster at a fraction of the price. His son had already left the craft because it “doesn’t pay anymore.” Further visits revealed the same story in shop after shop, and Artisans of Lucknow was born from a simple belief: the people who keep the city’s heritage alive deserve to make a fair living from it.
